JUVENILE DEPARTMENT SERVES SPECIAL NEEDS OF COMMUNITY
Within the Henry Wade Juvenile Justice Center, located off I-30 and Cockrell Hill, an organization unique within the District Clerk’s office serves young citizens, as well as their families.
While the term “Juvenile Delinquent” criminal activities may dominate the public’s image of the department, the District Clerk’s Juvenile section, lead by long-time employee Nina Mountique, handles civil and adoption matters as well.
“Many people may not be aware that issues like name changes for minors, custody cases and other non-criminal matters are handled here,” says Nina, who was Civil/Family Filing Supervisor before being named to head Juvenile operations.
The HWJJC constitutes a mini-District Clerk unit with its own file desk, process, courts, records and collections operations. Created more than 30 years ago, the 304th and 305th Judicial District Courts handle civil and adoptions as well as criminal matters. The District Clerk provides those courts with clerks, just as it does in the Civil/Family and Criminal Courts.
The Juvenile Operations may be in a separate location, but they are definitely a vital part of the push towards implementing technological innovations that make all functions more efficient, with new software recently installed to assist with collections. The knowledgeable and experienced staff at “Juvie” is an integral part of the District Clerk’s team that is growing in every way, along with the rest of the office.
